A Lexicon: From Dew-to-Rain

A double rainbow over a desert tent, during the first rains of the season on Selichot, sent me back to a question I keep returning to as a ritualist: what does it mean to ask for something you have no agency over? This piece traces the extraordinary precision of biblical and rabbinic Hebrew words for rain — 18 distinct terms for "rain" — alongside its unexpected cousin. But the heart of the piece is Shemini Atzeret: the one day of the year the tradition sets aside for shifting our prayers for water from dew to rain. It's a piece about precision, about trust, and about ritual practices of calling in rain, ancient and newly being revived.
