<image:title>About - Devorah Brous, MA, MA</image:title>
<image:caption>Grief Guide | Herbalist | Ritual Facilitator | 2x Nonprofit Founder @Dev.Brous (she|her) is the Creator of FromSoil2Soul. Certified Grief and Bereavement Care Counselor, I weave Jewish mysticism and nature-based practices into grief tending, creating online and in-person spaces where loss, love, and renewal are held. My work draws on both ancestral and emergent wisdom to reimagine how grief, land-based ritual, and nature’s cycles can chart the way toward solace, and restore balance. Through 1:1s, and collective healing rituals, I bring a deep curiosity for what becomes possible. Having worked on the frontlines in a war zone for 15 years and experiencing deep grief, I’m trained at tending people through rupture & traumatic loss. Drawing from evidence-based research, I find that immersive healing & sensory-based practices are supportive after any loss, as they don’t require words to speak the unspeakable, or comprehend the incomprehensible. I design and produce collective healing events and rituals (Skirball Cultural Center in 2025, with 1200 people) as well as online Grief Garden gatherings that meet twice weekly. For the past 25 years, I listen closely for ways to tend. Prior to forming FromSoil2Soul, I served as the founding Executive Director of two mission-driven environmental nonprofits: BUSTAN, and Netiya for a combined 18 years. A bridge-builder with systems-impacted and underinvested communities (indigenous, houseless, and formerly incarcerated people), I bring an undeniable passion for growing community stakeholder engagement through relationship-building, deep listening, and land stewardship. I have two Masters degrees in Conflict Resolution and Development Studies, and have trained extensively on facilitation of non-hierarchical frameworks for culture change that center equity, belonging, and empowerment. Deeply committed to counter-oppressive organizing, I have trained with Maia Feldman (Resetting the Table, Project Manager of UCLA’s Initiative to Study Hate). I have spent 15 years with Indigenous Bedouin; I’ve engaged in study of Council practice; Authentic Relating; as well as Non-Violent Communication (NVC); I have served as a coordinator for the Compassionate Listening Project in Israel/Palestine; and I have a Mindfulness Teacher Training certificate. …I see grief in people and in landscapes as a dynamic and emergent force. Bearing Witness to Grief through Listening to People and Place supports transcendence. I call this work Soul Remediation — it serves as the bedrock of regenerative healing, FromSoil2Soul. My professional affiliations and certifications are with: the MISS Foundation, the Elisabeth Kubler-Ross Family Trust, the Center for Loss and Trauma, the Selah Carefarm, the Grief Support Center, Connect & Thrive, and I serve the Altadena Healing Village, Worthy of Love, and Seva Seeds Collective monthly. <image:title>About - What is Soul Remediation?</image:title>
<image:caption>From my experience as a Grief Guide, the state of the human psyche following a traumatic rupture is like "biologically barren" soil, devoid of the foundational elements—safety, trust, and resilience—needed for healthy emotional functioning. Much the same, a post-fire landscape is "biologically barren," when the soil's intricate microbial communities are devastated. Scorched earth acts as a profound catalyst for renewal. FromSoil2Soul is about supporting YOU in the sacred art of listening to the land, the water, and your seasons of grief. It’s about cleansing and replenishing you - like feeding the soil with carbon and oxygen so life force can cycle nutrients once again. When we work together, we sit with anguish to witness what is — without judgment. We tend to the mystical emergence of new life from within. My job is to support you as you root down to rise. YOU are a Phoenix. Book a 1:1. Follow @dev.brous, and check out FromSoil2Soul offerings: or my former column, A Jewitch Herbal. Read Full Bio here.</image:caption>

<image:title>Rituals - Herbal Tea Blending Ritual</image:title>
<image:caption>FromSoil2Soul Tea Ritual + Weekly Rooftop Meditation Each week, I make six gallons of tea for our community. YOU are welcome to join us to sip tea, and meditate, 9am-9:30am Saturdays (Shalhevet). I begin crafting a blend on Friday - reflecting on the week and asking what blend can nourish our family and our community. Then, I harvest our homestead herbs and craft with a three-part structure — a steady base; supportive herbs; and an accent to carry the herbal healing forward. The process itself is the ritual: harvesting, watching water rise to a boil, inhaling the first lift of herbal steam, observing the colors deepen as the plants infuse, and allowing the plants to simmer as the brew deepens and preserves the plant’s volatile oils. Join our weekly rooftop meditation (9am, Shabbats at Shalhevet) and sip my herbal tea throughout the morning Shabbat service at Ikar. Source 1/2 lb bags of my artisanal tea blends through my online FromSoil2Soul shop. You are welcome to make this part of your Shabbat morning ritual, cup in hand, as we sit, and let the plants teach us their Torah. <image:title>Rituals - Cleansing Rituals</image:title>
<image:caption>FromSoil2Soul Tree of Life Cleanse: 49-Days (Omer) FromSoil2Soul Elemental Cleanse: 4-wk (Elul) Twice each year, I open a seasonal threshold — a guided ritual for recalibration across body, home, and energetic field. Through herbal support, intentional decluttering, and spiritual practices rooted in Jewish mysticism and somatic science, we clear accumulation that has settled into our tissues and our rooms, restoring coherence between nervous system, environment, and spirit. As layers release, energy steadies and desire clarifies. These cleanses are for those who feel the quiet weight of stored grief and unfinished life and are ready to step into the next season with integrity. You cross this threshold to remember how you want to live — and you emerge with space, clarity, and a steadier devotion to what truly matters.</image:caption>

<image:title>Urban Homestead - Regenerative Urban Homesteading and Climate Resilience</image:title>
<image:caption>In 2010, we transformed a conventional landscape that was a bleak “blister in the sun” into urban homestead growing 27 fruit trees, and raising chickens through urban agro-ecology and regenerative farming practices. Here, we grow small-scale, bio-intensive perennial crops on a parcel of less than 1/5 acre. We partner with our neighbors to compost their food scraps and feed the land to grow living soil in reciprocal relationship with nature - minimizing water-use, and rebuilding soil organic matter to increase biodiversity and soil fertility. By actively farming soil microbes, we feed the Soil Food Web; use less water; cool the grounds; and avoid chemical inputs and synthetic fertilizers! By optimizing the photosynthetic drawdown of atmospheric CO2 to feed and regenerate living soil, this form of agriculture grows an abundance of nutrient-dense crops in harmony with nature to adapt and mitigate the effects of climate change. <image:title>Urban Homestead - Our Urban Homestead History</image:title>
<image:caption>NOT gifted land in 1862 as part of the Homestead Act, we use this term conscious of the impact of US land reform legislation responsible for distributing over 270 million acres of land to 1.5 million white settlers, and some 6000 former slaves. Our stewardship is also met by organizing for and supporting land redistribution to BIPoC organizations and indigenous #landback. Originally, the San Fernando Valley hills and valleys were lush with oaks and walnut trees, and were later planted with diverse citrus groves and many invasive species. In 1769, Spanish conquistador Gaspar de Portolà and explorers arrived. We purchased land and transformed a conventional home (sun-bleached, compacted slab of dirt) built in the 1950s into a vibrant food forest. This is also known as a BUSTAN (Hebrew/Arabic) a polyculture orchard reminiscent of the traditional Iranian polyculture of the Middle East. Today we tend 27 fruit trees, a water-wise greywater food/herb garden, an aquaponic farming system, two 9x50 vegetable gardens, free-range chickens, five composting sites with tens of thousands of Red Wiggler worms and food we grow for our chickens. By growing perennials and dry lands vegetable and fruit varieties, our homestead is entirely pesticide-free and uses no synthetic fertilizers. On our good days, we aspire to be mostly zero-waste and even get off-screen a bit. Along with my husband and our two children, this thriving urban homestead is home to a heap of happy hens and a school of hardworking fish that power an aquaponic medicinal herb garden. We compost for 18 of our neighbors through our FromSoil2Soul Super Soil Site. Click here to drop off your scraps: MakeSoil.org, or find us on ShareWaste. Here, we alchemize waste into resource and literally compost anything possible.</image:caption>

<image:title>Soul-Sabbatical - When grief uproots you, healing begins beneath the surface. Designed for those navigating loss — the loss of a loved one, identity, relationship, health, or direction — who long to heal in rhythm with the earth. Are you: Experiencing overwhelm, and not sure where to turn next Navigating loss(es) and seeking a sacred, grounded support system Longing for structure that honors body, land, and spirit Craving guidance that is both practical and mystical Ready to meet your grief as alive A Giver, generously attuned to other people’s needs often before your own (by necessity or by orientation) Drawing from my FromSoil2Soul regenerative model: four “micro-seasons” guide you through the ecology of grief — Fallow, Sow, Tend, and Harvest. Over 7-months, you may become more skilled at staying in your heart; in your body; and knowing what your grief is communicating. You may learn to shore up your boundaries. You may learn to eat more nourishing foods and make your own herbal remedies to nourish your gut. You may find the solace you’ve been seeking in a safe, sacred community forum. Regenerate from loss guided by nature’s intelligence. This immersive journey aligns with the cycles of nature, and the ancient Sabbatical that occurs every 7th year. Together we weave herbal ritual, embodied practices to restore your nervous system, and cultivate grounded renewal. Metabolize grief, and nourish your soul in alignment with regenerative currents, rhythms, and cycles.</image:title>

<image:title>Garden Install & Seasonal Refresh - Kitchen Garden INSTALL</image:title>
<image:caption>Step 1: Consult + Planning + Design Process - $1200 It all begins with a seed! Schedule a Consult today. During this initial consult, we’ll explore your space, unearth your dream garden, and define your goals, timeline, and budget. Wild and productive, or a fecund yet serene garden? My specialty is helping clients create a climate-wise garden full of food and medicine with a focus on permaculture techniques to save water, restore the soil food web, and create beautiful, healthy habitat in the process. This may include fruit trees and perennial fruiting vines, with a flourishing, colorful pallet of edibles and herbs. It’s your open canvas. Together, we’ll seed your idea. Discover: Do you want our fromsoil2soul custom-designed enclosed wooden raised beds of any size, or do you prefer an in-ground permaculture garden? How much food do you want to grow? We’ll find the right location, and choose the right method for your patterns and the quantity of food, yard waste, and paper/cardboard you want to decompose. Do you want a compost set you up or would you rather upgrade your existing system to regularly decompose home/yard waste without a hassle? I craft a pre-design for approval with landscape and plant preferences. Then, I’ll map the project flow, and define a fee schedule to install, build and plant a kitchen garden that will continually REGENERATE both your soil and your soul! The boutique suite of fromsoil2soul install services starts at a 4-figure investment. Install fees are based on project scope. Let’s get you growing!</image:caption>

<image:caption>I am SO sorry for your loss - and I’m grateful that you have reached out to connect memories with blessings. Here, we’ll do some grief tending. A Grief Garden is a twice-weekly online trauma-informed support group that I facilitate. I am a certified and trauma-informed compassionate bereavement care grief counselor. We have closed, time-bound groups (see below) and we have a continuous ongoing group. Drop-ins are always welcome. To keep our community safe, click here to join a Grief Garden WhatsApp for links and reminders and supportive community. We gather twice weekly: *every “Monday Mourning” (8:30am pst) *every Wednesday evening (7-8:30pm pst) Sliding-Scale</image:caption>

<image:title>Grief Garden - What’s special in a Grief Garden?</image:title>
<image:caption>Our circles are intentionally mixed. Grief does not segregate in absolutes, and neither does healing. Loss may include mourning death by suicide, terminal illness, divorce, caregiving burnout, estrangement, transition, and any other complicated grief. Support is embodied, pragmatic, creative, and rooted in ritual. Through FromSoil2Soul Grief Garden support groups, a “continuum of Jewish grief care” is extended and accessible long after the Shiva and Shloshim (first 30 days), throughout the Unveiling and Celebration of Life, and even beyond — so you don’t have to grieve alone. This way, people are held within the inclusive embrace of ancient practices, rather than stumbling to outsource support, elsewhere. The Grief Garden provides a conscious, safe haven that is confidential and non-judgmental. Participants explore nourishing soul-care practices — and mindful coping skills while gaining supportive community. Because grieving relies on social support, and shared vulnerability reduces isolation. Want to try it out? Fill out this Grief Garden Interest Form to see if we are a good fit.</image:caption>

<image:title>Grief Garden - 4-wk Jewish Grief Garden</image:title>
<image:caption>This Grief Garden Online Group is a 4-week guided circle for anyone navigating loss — recent or long past, acute or quietly enduring. Meeting in a structured, facilitated and closed cohort, we move through grief with steadiness and intention: sharing stories, and leaning into our mourning rather than away from it as we practice embodied regulation. We tend your grief through Jewish text, the Hebrew calendar, our holiday cycle, and Jewish ritual. This is not therapy, yet it is deeply healing, where sorrow is tended the way a garden is: with rhythm, patience, skill, and care. Participants meet online for three 60-minute sessions, and an optional in-person session for the fourth. This small, confidential cohort builds grief literacy, nervous system resilience, and meaningful connection with the living world that transforms death into renewal. Meet online, Fridays, 10-11am PST</image:caption>

<image:title>Grief Garden - For Womxn in Grief</image:title>
<image:caption>Mixed Loss | 18 sessions, 90 Minutes | Small Cohort This Grief Garden is for high-functioning women who are the steady ones — the earners, the caretakers, the philanthropists, the ones everyone else leans on - even as you grieve. You manage institutions, families, aging parents, children, and impossible calendars. You show up. You deliver. You keep going. And yet — grief lives in you, often privately, often without language, often without permission. This group offers contained, culturally resonant grief tending for womxn. Here, you have permission to be supported before collapse. Permission to grieve without losing your competence. Support is structured and substantive — grounded in trauma-informed practice, nervous system regulation and herbal wellness, Through ritual, text, and embodied skill-building, you metabolize grief rather than compartmentalize it. By doing do, you nourish your relationships with self, and the realm Beyond touch. Times/Dates TBD with the Group</image:caption>

<image:caption>Part 1: February 6th, 2022 - 10am PST Part 2: March 20th, 2022 - 10am PST What can we learn from the ancient laws of the Sabbatical to regenerate both soil and soul? This fall, as hundreds of farmers revitalize a practice of fallowing soil to replenish microbiology in overworked and overtreated soil, and agitate for community food sovereignty, there are vast implications for systemic repair and climate transformation. The ancient wisdom of Sabbath is both constructive (economic redistribution, freeing the enslaved) and constrictive (ceasing work, land regeneration)—a dialect that is ultimately about setting limits on our human tendency to exploit with unfettered consumption, rather than tend the earth. This session will be dynamic and experiential as we probe the Sabbatical as a collective tool to restore our health and the health of the land, as well as economic balance and social equity.</image:caption>

We'll touch on the Bedouin, the Amazon, the Dakota Access Pipeline, and more, and make space for whatever is going on in YOUR community. <image:caption>Wednesday, January 12th, 2022 ~ 10:30am-12pm Earth-Based Climate Healing Shmita Text Study In a time of climate crisis, what can ancient wisdom offer us? Torah gave a mission to the Jewish people to create a world guided by Shmita-level respect for land, for the stranger, for humanity, and for all creatures. Ecological disasters that were historical/mythical memory for our ancestors foreshadowed the catastrophe of our civilization. Shmita was meant to divert the world from this catastrophe, teaching how social justice, justice for land in the global sense, and justice for the land of Israel/Palestine, are inseparable. We will explore this nexus through theology, theories of change, intersectionality, and other angles that illuminate how to integrate our work on justice, resilience, and sustainability.</image:caption>

<image:caption>November 29th, 2021 10-11am PST @thisiscalmer and @BeKindMovementUK Hosted by Founder of Calmer, Tania Diggory, this event will feature LA-based Consultant and Founder of FromSoil2Soul Devorah Brous, and Founder of Be Kind Movement Premila Puri. For many of us, as the evenings draw in and the weather turns, our wellbeing dips slightly as we adjust to the new winter season. At Calmer, we’re dedicated to encouraging good mental health and wellbeing practices, whatever time of year. However, we acknowledge that it can be particularly difficult to keep up the same routine during the winter months. With this in mind, join us for a special fundraising event on 29th November as we highlight the ways we can adapt our wellbeing practices during a time where we might be feeling a little less motivated. We're also running a special prize draw for individuals and businesses who donate to this event, full details below on the prizes! Through various exercises and discussions, we’ll be sharing evidence-based insights and strategies on self-kindness, Mindfulness, Emotional Intelligence and self-care – all of which will provide you with a toolkit of practices to support and nurture your mental health this winter. 1.5 hr. community event</image:caption>

<image:title>Events | Collective Journeys | Cleanses - Green Sabbath with Dev.Brous & Ched Meyers</image:title>
<image:caption>Friday, August 27th: 9am PST, 12pm EST What can we learn from the ancient laws of the Sabbatical to regenerate both soil and soul? This fall, as hundreds of farmers revitalize a practice of fallowing soil to replenish microbiology in overworked/overtreated soil, and agitate for community food sovereignty, there are vast implications for systemic repair and climate transformation. The ancient wisdom of Sabbath is both constructive (economic redistribution, freeing the enslaved) and constrictive (ceasing work, land regeneration)—a dialect that is ultimately about setting limits on our human tendency to exploit with unfettered consumption, rather than tend the earth. Learn from an indigenous #landback activist, a Jewish urban homesteader, writer, & frontline community organizer, and a radical Christian theologian, activist, and writer about the vast implications of Sabbath spirituality, economics and politics. This session will be dynamic and experiential as we probe the Sabbatical as a collective tool to restore balance between acquisition and disposal; mourning and rejoicing; harvesting and fallowing with the earth’s cycles to advance indigenous land rights, ecological, and social justice.</image:caption>

In this session, we analyze environmental stewardship through a Jewish and Indigenous lens, and take a hard look at what it really means to be a good ally as we support Indigenous communities in their fight for land rights. We will also address the ways in which allies have historically engaged in harmful behavior by silencing Indigenous voices and hijacking Indigenous-led spaces. In this session, join us for a discussion of the book, “As Long As Grass Grows: The Indigenous Fight for Environmental Justice, from Colonization to Standing Rock" by Dina Gilio-Whitaker (start reading it now!). We’ll explore Native American environmental advocacy, and building Jewish and Native partnerships for indigenous-led environmental justice. 1 hr. session - FREE</image:caption>
